October Recap

October is almost over, so it’s time for an October Recap. Here’s what’s been going on in Jess Michaels World in the past month:

  • After 3 months, we are getting settled in our new house. I’ve been up here since September. It isn’t perfect, we’re still working on getting settled furniture-wise and figuing out where to put things and what we need. But we’re home!
  • We’re also almost finished with our renovation. As with all renovation, it took longer than we thought but it’s almost all done now.

July Recap

In just a few days, July will be gone, so it’s time for a July Recap. Here’s what’s been going on in Jess Michaels World in the past month:

  • An Affair in Winter is out – I can’t express to you all how excited I am to launch the Seasons series with An Affair in Winter (which came out July 12). I had the idea for this story several YEARS ago and have been chomping at the bit to write it.

On My Own

Everyone hold on to your hats, this week I’m on my own. I think most everyone knows that five years ago my husband retired from his job in the software industry and began working for me full-time. He manages everything in the business from payroll and taxes to formatting and uploading and all the stuff in between. This means we get to spend a lot of time together, as we both work from home.

People have two reactions when they hear that.… [Read more...]

Not Doing Everything

On Monday, my husband and I went to the new house we just bought and did the inspection and had the contractors come for some renovations we’ll be doing once we close. It was a whirlwind couple of days with a long drive up and back (6 hours total) and then the long day at the house. On Tuesday, An Affair in Winter (Seasons 1) released. At some point, I was talking to my husband about doing a garage sale and he said, “We Not Doing Everything at Once.”… [Read more...]

Fresh and New Starts

Today my husband and I are driving up to a town about three hours north of where we live now in Tucson. It’s not just to see the fireworks in a mountain town or hang out at the World’s Oldest Rodeo (though both those things are on the menu). It’s actually also about new starts.

The past few years have been…odd. Oh yes, I left traditional publishing and launched my indie career and it has been more successful than I could ever have hoped.… [Read more...]

June Recap!

It’s crazy to think, but June is over (well, tomorrow it’s over). So I thought it might be fun to do a little June recap! Here’s what’s been happening in Jess Michaels world in June:

  • The East Valley Authors Reteat: Michael and I started out the month by driving to Monrovia, CA to present to the EVA RWA chapter. I spoke on love scenes and increasing writing output. Mike talked about promotion and author platform.

Why I Write: A Flashback Post

This is a flashback post about why I write that I did nearly 2 years ago for a reader blog, as I was just about to embark on indie publishing The Other Duke! Why I Do This is still the same really. Writing is the heart of me and it’s fun to see what I was thinking on the cusp of what has become the greatest adventure of my life:

homertownshipToday I thought I’d talk about why I do this job.… [Read more...]

The Trouble With Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston

Let’s talk about Tom Hiddleston. Anyone who knows me (including my poor beleaguered husband) knows that I have a major Jones for this guy. I haven’t actually written a Hiddleston hero yet (though I did a Cumberbatch one) but there’s just something about him.

Maybe it’s the wickedness. See that expression on the left? That knowing little winky stare that probably means you’re in big trouble? That’s pretty much cat nip for me. So often bad guys in romance (including some of my own) are just…bad.… [Read more...]

Buy A Historical – Why I Love Historical Romance

As many of you already know, late last year I began a newsletter which lists new historical romance releases each week. Buy A Historical is something that was born out of the old service on my Passionate Pen website where I listed a monthly run down of historical romances being published (mostly by the traditional publishers). As the market has changed, I thought this was a better way to spread the word about the genre and its new releases.… [Read more...]

I Love House Hunters

For about 18 months now, my husband and I have been debating a move. When we came to Tucson in 2011, we thought it would be our forever home and I do love this place, but a lot has changed since then and so we have begun the (VERY SLOW) process of moving on. Of course this makes one of my favorite obsessions have a secondary purpose. For years and years I’ve been into House Hunters.… [Read more...]

Paper Porn: The Not So Silent Addiction

I have a confession to make: I’m a paper addict. Let that settle in. I know it’s shocking. Okay, it’s not shocking given my job. A writer who likes paper? That’s like a writer who likes cats. Maybe I’m just a walking cliche. But it is what it is and I think we don’t talk about it enough.

First, let’s talk about notebooks. I don’t know if I collect them but I do have a lot.… [Read more...]

All the Upcoming News!

Phew, I know it’s been a while since I blogged last, but it’s been a busy 2016 so far. Now I want to share a lot of upcoming fun news.

First, audio books:

The entire Notorious Flynns series is now up in audio format. We have just started The Wicked Woodleys series into audio. Forbidden will be up soon (in the next few weeks likely). The amazing Danielle O’Farrell is narrating all of them and we’ll be caught up with all the releases very soon.… [Read more...]

2015 in Review

As I look back on 2015, my head spins. It’s been a wild and crazy ride for me. Of course most of you know that this year is when I went “the full indie” (which is like The Full Monty but with more clothing). I admit, I went into the year with a lot of trepidation. What if I failed? What if none of you bought my books without a publisher name on the spine of them.… [Read more...]

Why the USA Today Bestseller List Means So Much to Me

usatodaycolorThis week something amazing happened to me. Something I had long dreamed of but had come to accept just probably wouldn’t ever happen. I hit a bestseller list. A BIG bestseller list. I hit the USA Today.

Hitting a major list (New York Times or USA Today) had been a dream of mine since I sold my first book to HarperCollins in 2004, but over the years I was told and began to believe that it would never happen for me.… [Read more...]

Question Wednesday: Bogged down with “facts” and “figures”

Every week I answer a question from a reader or writer here on my blog. You can add a  question to the queue by putting it in the comments on any blog. This week’s question is from Virginia:

When writing, do you ever find yourself/your story getting bogged down with historical details, facts about time, etc.?

Actually, no. For me, historical romance is fun to write because of the characters, the relationships, the pasts that alter how they act in the future.… [Read more...]
