Question Wednesday: Bogged down with “facts” and “figures”

Every week I answer a question from a reader or writer here on my blog. You can add a  question to the queue by putting it in the comments on any blog. This week’s question is from Virginia:

When writing, do you ever find yourself/your story getting bogged down with historical details, facts about time, etc.?

Actually, no. For me, historical romance is fun to write because of the characters, the relationships, the pasts that alter how they act in the future. Character drives me, as well as plot and it’s what I focus on when I write. Of course, I do research and want my books to be as accurate as I can. But to me, the historical details should enhance the story, not run the story.

Sometimes there are tidbits that I read about that help to develop a story. Right now I’m researching an exhibit that came to London during the Regency because it’s going to be a really fun element to add to my next project. So that makes me dig a little deeper. But for the most part, what you’ll find in my books is character driven romance with history as the backdrop.
