This week’s featured erotic historical romance author is KT Grant, who writes lesbian historical romance. Check out her journey here:
When I decided I wanted to be a published author, I wanted to write romance. I wasn’t sure about the sensuality factor or which type of romance sub-genre I would write, but I knew it would have a happily ever after at the end. In 2010, I accomplished my dream of becoming a publishing author. My debut novel was a contemporary lesbian romance, titled Lovestruck. Soon after I was asked by epublisher, Ravenous Romance to write a lesbian historical romance, based on The Princess’s Bride, and make it erotic. I accepted the challenge, more than happy to give a sexy spin on what became a swashbuckling pirate romance, complete with sword fights, ship battles and a twist on a ravishment love scene. Writing spicy love scenes wasn’t hard at all, because I wanted to show my heroines’ strong passion and desire for one another, which lead to some inventive love scenes because my two lovers were women. In August of 2010, The Princess’s Bride was released and became one of my biggest sellers.
I was then asked to write more lesbian romance with an erotic slant. For some reason I choose to write historicals, set in different time periods, ranging from Regency Victorian England, to Post-Civil War America. Because of these time periods, my two heroines couldn’t be out in the open with their love. Their attraction and sexual interactions had to be kept a secret because they would be ruined in the eyes of society if they were discovered. That helped with the sensuality factor, because a secret love affair can be erotic because it’s considered taboo. The fear of getting caught heightens the encounter between my two heroines, which creates more sexual intensity between the lovers. The tone and atmosphere of the love scenes smolders because of the passion shared, and not necessarily because of certain sexual positions or “props” that are sometimes used in erotic romance.
Historical Romance might stick to certain types of tropes, but with Erotic Historical Romance, boundaries are pushed and lines are crossed, which makes for exciting reading.
