Question Wednesday: Travel in 2015

Every week I answer a question from a reader or writer here on my blog. You can add a  question to the queue by putting it in the comments on any blog. This week’s question is :

Last year you went to a lot of conferences, but I don’t see a lot of travel on your schedule this year? Why aren’t you traveling as much? And are you coming to a place near me?

The cool thing about being a writer is that there is no right or wrong way to do any of it.… [Read more...]

Question Wednesday: Bogged down with “facts” and “figures”

Every week I answer a question from a reader or writer here on my blog. You can add a  question to the queue by putting it in the comments on any blog. This week’s question is from Virginia:

When writing, do you ever find yourself/your story getting bogged down with historical details, facts about time, etc.?

Actually, no. For me, historical romance is fun to write because of the characters, the relationships, the pasts that alter how they act in the future.… [Read more...]

My First Romance

thebeautifulwomanLast year, my mother sent me a package that contained, amongst other things, my very first romance novel. Well, novel may be overstating it. It was a two-paged story with what I think you will agree are some incredibly questionable margins. But you may also see a sneak peek into the developing mind of Jess Michaels (a stern man, a broken lady? UM HELLO!!). So I give you:

The Beautiful Woman

There once was a beautiful woman and she was lonely. … [Read more...]

Awesomely Strong Heroines

I know I ask for them, but in truth I rarely read reviews. Reviews, at least in my mind, are really meant for readers, to help each other make decisions. I want them because it helps with my Amazon ranking and Goodreads visibility (and because it helps other readers make a decision if they’ve never read me before), but as an author reviews can only give you a swelled head or a broken heart.

However, I do sometimes see, either accidentally or when they’re directed at me personally, comments people make about my stories and one of my favorites to read is that I write strong, unique heroines.… [Read more...]

Question Wednesday: Emotions

Every week I answer a question from a reader or writer here on my blog. You can add a  question to the queue by putting it in the comments on any blog. This week’s question is:

Do you have a scene in one of your books that has made you laugh or cry?

Beauty and the Earl by Jess MichaelsI tend to snort rather than laugh when writing something sarcastic or funny in a book. As you all know, my books are rather dark, so I don’t write a lot “laugh out loud” moments.… [Read more...]

Push It. Push It Real Good.

This past week I’ve been talking a lot about something I’ve been doing called a “push week”. I thought today might be a good time to talk about what that means. I write quickly and I want to be able to put out my books that are indie published this year rapidly both for you guys and for myself. I already write about 60 pages a week but once a book I always try to do a push week.… [Read more...]

It’s Independence Day!

The Other DukeI’m so pleased and thrilled and nervous and excited to announce the publication of my 49th book, The Other Duke. You can read about it here and order it from the links below, but I wanted to talk more today about what a remarkable change this book indicates in my life. You see, this book is my first independently published book since 2011. And it is the first time I have jumped 100% into indie publication.… [Read more...]

Goals for 2015

Happy New Year everyone! I have to say I am so massively happy to see 2014 come to an end. It was a great year professionally for both Michael and I, but it was a very sad year for us personally and I’m really looking forward to a happier, calmer life in 2015.

My Big Year went so well last year that I decided to do it all over again. Once again, I put my goals into three different categories: Career, Writing and Self.… [Read more...]

Question Wednesday: Upcoming Projects

Every week I answer a question from a reader or writer here on my blog. You can add a  question to the queue by putting it in the comments on any blog. This week’s question is:

What are your upcoming projects for 2015?

This is a great question, considering it’s the last day of the year and it’s time to reflect on the past and think about the future (more on that tomorrow). But here are my upcoming books for 2015:

The Other DukeJanuary 13: The Other Duke — my first indie project and the first book in my new series, The Notorious Flynns.… [Read more...]

The Big Year #1 in Review

Here we are at the end of another year. But this wasn’t just a normal year for me. I have been calling this my “big year” because I decided to kick everything about building my career into high gear. So did I succeed? Was this truly a “big year”. Well, yes!

First, I had writing goals. This year I wrote 5 books and I published 6 (5 with a publisher, one self-published). Everything I wanted to see written and out there got done and I feel so happy and proud of those accomplishments.… [Read more...]

Question Wednesday: Acting Out

Every week I answer a question from a reader or writer here on my blog. You can add a  question to the queue by putting it in the comments on any blog. This week’s question is:

Do you ever act out scenes in your books?

I’m not big on acting out a scene in a book, but I do occasionally say dialogue out loud. If a scene comes into my head and I’m in bed or in the shower, I’ll do the dialogue.… [Read more...]

Question Wednesday: Titles, titles, titles

Every week I answer a question from a reader or writer here on my blog. You can add a  question to the queue by putting it in the comments on any blog. This week’s question is:

How do you come up with titles for your books?

Titles are one of the hardest thing for me to come up with. I write 65,000-80,000 word novels usually so trying to encompass that book into a 2-5 word title is… hard.… [Read more...]

It’s My Anniversary!

Normally today would be an erotic historical romance feature and we’ll pick that up again next week, but today is a very exciting one and I want to share it with you. You see, today is the tenth anniversary of the publication of my very first book.

Back in 2003, I was writing historical romance, waiting for my big break to come. Indie publishing was all but non-existent and there weren’t very many choices out there for writers but to wait for a publisher to decide you were the “one” that week.… [Read more...]

Question Wednesday: The fun of creation!

Every week I answer a question from a reader or writer here on my blog. You can add a  question to the queue by putting it in the comments on any blog. This week’s question is from Kate Pearce:

What is your favorite part of creating a new book?

That is such a hard answer to give! First, let me tell you a little more about my process. I have an idea and I flesh that out into a blurb for myself.… [Read more...]
