TEACH ME and erotic romance
I’m so thrilled Jess has asked me to appear on her blog. For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Cassandra Dean and I write historical and fantasy romance ranging from sweet to steamy. I also play about in the eras, roaming from Ancient Rome to Victorian to the Old West and beyond. My books take readers on an emotional rollercoaster, from the lowest of lows to the joyous of highs. And, of course, my characters fall into the forever kind of love.
Today, I’ll be talking about TEACH ME, a story very close to my heart. Though it was my second published work, it was actually the first manuscript I ever completed and came about through trying circumstances. I was recovering from a low point in my life and, to cheer myself, had embarked on a three month holiday in Europe. At the time, I thought I’d never write again, so much so that I didn’t take any paper or pens with me.
Well. That was foolish.
About a week after my arrival, a scene popped into my head, a scene which would eventually become the epilogue of TEACH ME. Scrounging for pen and paper has never been so desperate! Luckily, the hotel I was staying at provided paper and pen in the room. I started scribbling and in very short order, I had the outline of TEACH ME. Huzzah!
When plotting TEACH ME, I chose very deliberately to use the genre of erotic romance to tell Elizabeth and Malvern’s tale. I love erotic romance and have enjoyed numerous books within this genre (including some of Jess’s work!). For TEACH ME, the premise is the desire of the heroine, Elizabeth, for erotic knowledge. To that end, she undertakes lessons from the profligate Earl of Malvern, lessons that grow from simple, impersonal curiosity to deep, intense, abiding love. I thought the best way to show this progression was through the use of erotic encounters.
When first they meet, Elizabeth is interested only in the erotic pleasure a man can give her, while Malvern is interested in trying to shock this curious widow. As they grow to know each other, Elizabeth becomes interested in only the pleasure Malvern, and no other, can give her, while Malvern discovers Elizabeth is more than he ever could have imagined, his cynicism shaken to his core. The intensity of their connection increases through each encounter, until what started as a general instruction becomes intense lovemaking, and as their lessons progress, they discover they only want the other. For Elizabeth, there is only Malvern and for Malvern, only Elizabeth.
I really enjoyed showing this progression from general to specific. It was really awesome to find little tricks and bits to show this progression, from Elizabeth discovering Malvern’s Christian name and using that exclusively, to Malvern realising a simple kiss from Elizabeth destroys his composure utterly.
Thanks for hanging with me, and I hope you enjoyed this little peak into TEACH ME.
Ever curious, Elizabeth, Viscountess Rocksley, has turned her curiosity to erotic pleasure. Three years a widow, she boldly employs the madam of a brothel for guidance but never had she expected her education to be conducted by a coldly handsome peer of the realm.
To the Earl of Malvern, the erotic tutelage of a skittish widow is little more than sport, however the woman he teaches is far from the mouse he expects. With her sly humor and insistent joy, Elizabeth obliterates all his expectations and he, unwillingly fascinated, can’t prevent his fall.
Each more intrigued than they are willing to admit, Elizabeth and Malvern embark upon a tutelage that will challenge them, change them, come to mean everything to them…until a heartbreaking betrayal threatens to tear them apart forever.
Cassandra grew up daydreaming, inventing fantastical worlds and marvelous adventures. Once she learned to read (First phrase – To the Beach. True story), she was never without a book, reading of other people’s fantastical worlds and marvelous adventures.
Fairy tales, Famous Fives, fantasies and fancies; horror stories, gumshoe detectives, science fiction; Cassandra read it all. Then she discovered Romance and a true passion was born.
So, once upon a time, after making a slight detour into the world of finance, Cassandra tried her hand at writing. After a brief foray into horror, she couldn’t discount her true passion. She started to write Romance and fell head over heels.
The love affair exists to this very day.
Cassandra lives in Adelaide, South Australia.
